LIGHT UP NIGHT MEADVILLE SET FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3RD
It’s that time of year, once again, to welcome in the holiday season with community spirit, excitement, and fun. The Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Meadville, Make It Meadville, and First National Insurance Agency, and the Meadville Market House will officially kick-off the Christmas season with Light Up Night Meadville 2010. Light Up Night Meadville is again being held in conjunction with First Friday promotions sponsored by Make It Meadville.
The Friends of the Market House will kick the evening off with a Light Up Night Reception from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at the Meadville Market House. From 5:00-9:00 p.m. enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides around downtown Meadville and live hammer dulcimer music in the Market House. Carriage rides are $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.
The Chamber of Commerce is organizing a holiday decorating contest for downtown businesses. Secret judges will visit participating stores to check out the decorations and holiday snacks. Winners will be announced at the Chamber’s December Monthly Luncheon on December 7th at Perkins. A list of participating businesses will be provided closer to the event so the community can also visit and enjoy the merriment. Businesses wishing to participate in the contest should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 337-8030 for an entry form. Cost to enter is $10.
Make It Meadville has encouraged downtown businesses open for First Friday to extend their hours until 9:00 p.m. instead of the regular 8:00 closing time of other First Friday events. Businesses will also be providing holiday snacks for patrons. @ the bank festivities will include music by keyboardist Nat Licht from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and guitarist Gary Gunton will play from 7:30-9:00 p.m.
Festivities at Diamond Park will begin at 5:30 PM in the Diamond Park Gazebo in Downtown Meadville. COOL 101.7 will kick-off the celebration with Christmas music. Beginning at 6:00 PM activities will include: the presentation of the community tree, decorated by First National Insurance Agency, sing along Christmas carols with Miss Crawford County and Miss Meadville and the reading of the official proclamation to Light Up Meadville by the Mayor of Meadville, J. Christopher Soff. Complimentary hot chocolate and cookies will also be available.
At 6:30 p.m. Santa Claus will arrive at Diamond Park to help with the lighting of the Christmas tree, followed by a parade down Chestnut Street to the Downtown Mall. The parade will stop briefly at Chestnut and Park Avenue as Santa waves the lights on @ the Bank and at Chestnut and Market Streets to light up the Market House as he leads the parade to The Downtown Mall on Water Street. Once at The Downtown Mall, Santa will be hearing Christmas wishes and passing out candy canes. A brass quintet from Allegheny College will be performing Christmas music during Santa’s visit to the Downtown Mall.
The 5th Annual Christmas Cookie Bake-Off will be held @ the Bank on Wednesday, December 1. This event is sponsored by Make It Meadville with Adult and Youth (under 18) entries being judged separately. One Adult and one Youth winner will be announced by Santa at Diamond Park during the Light Up Night festivities on December 3 and winners will receive a Santa Gift Bag worth $25 from Make It Meadville businesses. Entry forms can be picked up @ the Bank, 940 Park Avenue or at the Chamber of Commerce office, 908 Diamond Park. Deadline to return entry forms for the Bake-Off is Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Please mail, drop off or fax entries to: 814-724-3199 or 814-337-8022.
